Taking Care of Ceramic Tile Floors

Sunday, November 12, 2017

Most new homes these days have very little carpeting in them. We have a wide range of materials, colors, and patterns to choose from when it comes to floors and most people avoid carpeting. Carpets cling to dirt and pet hair, they stain easily, they are costly to clean, and are not healthy for people with allergies. Nearly everyone likes the look of ceramic tile floors and can appreciate how easy they are to clean.

While ceramic tile floors are low maintenance you do have to take care to sweep or dust mop once or twice a week. Dirt and debris can settle in the grout between the tiles and discolor it. Particles can even scratch the tile, creating minute fissures that will eventually become a trap for dirt and ruin the look of the tile. A good dust mop will do the job and it only takes a few minutes to run it over the surface of the floor and into the corners. Some people use a broom while others like to use their vacuums on a bare floor setting. Whatever your preference, a quick going over will keep your floor looking beautiful for years.

As for routine cleaning, the WizMop is all you’ll need for ceramic tile floors. Don’t use harsh cleansers, as those can harm the materials. If you want to use something other than plain water you can mix 1/3 cup of vinegar with warm water in the refillable bottle. Vinegar leaves your floors clean and shiny with no lingering scent or filmy residue. A word of caution: do NOT use vinegar on marble tile floors because its acidity can damage them. There are other cleansers made especially for marble or you can use a teaspoon of Murphy’s Oil Soap in 20 ounces of warm water.

The best way to deal with dirt on ceramic tile floors is to prevent it in the first place. You should always wipe up spills right away with a damp cloth. Unless it’s a pet accident or food, water is sufficient to wipe away spills. Have the family take off their shoes at the door and have a tray for shoes so that they don’t become a tripping hazard. Door mats inside and out will catch most dirt before it reaches your floor. If you have a pet door for your dog or cat you’ll want to have mats on both sides of the door.

Another way to keep your ceramic tile floor looking beautiful is to maintain the grout. Use a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on the grout once a year. This light scrubbing will keep white grout looking fresh and new as if the floor was just installed.

It will only take a few minutes to clean your floors with WizMop spray mop. If you have an active family you should probably use the WizMop once a week at least. Couples or those who live by themselves won’t have to use WizMop as often. You’ll love how easy it is to use WizMop and how clean it will leave your ceramic tile floors!
